Happy One Month Anniversary!

I needed a few days to embrace and evolve into a mature and wiser 30 year old person. I've had a great few days celebrating my birthday and I've even been able to leave the house for a few hours at a time on my own! I thought these privileges came when one became a teenager, but apparently I regained access to the world and going outside on my own when I turned 30.

Definitely taking my "outdoor time" easy and just getting fresh air makes me feel like a new person. Dr. Samstein told us that I should go outside everyday so I'm using this recovery time to do just that. And going outside is helping my appetite too! One of my very good friends, Lindsey, was in NY with her fiancé Merek (they live in Atlanta and are getting married next week in Austin!!) and they took me to two of the best restaurants that I've ever been to! And then two of my other very good friends who I adore and have visited me so much while I'm here recovering (Amy and Alexandra) took me to a birthday dinner at Mercer Kitchen and I had yet another fabulous mini-meal!! Sister joined in on these dinner outings and she has been nice enough to spilt all her food with me when we go out to eat so I'm sure she will especially love it when I start having a better appetite so that she won't have to share her food :) So I proudly say that I've eaten three days in a row. And in my defense, dad doesn't have an appetite some days either so I think it's totally normal. Dad did some blood work early this morning and we are praying that all the results will look good. His insulin levels have been through the roof, but hopefully some adjustments to his medication will help control his diabetes. He will meet with one of his doctors later today to go over all the results and I'll keep you posted on what the doctor says today.

I have two appointments on Monday so we will see what Dr. Samstein's prognosis is on me and if I've improved any on his 1-10 scale. Surely, I'm at least a 6 if I've eaten three days in a row?! I know the norm is to eat everyday, but we are taking baby steps. Here are some pictures from this week and a few other ones that I found on my dad's phone prior to the surgery.

Last post in my 20's!!

I had my second appointment with Dr. Samstein this morning and even though it wasn't bad, it wasn't great either. So I'm the type that likes to see the glass half full so when the doctor told me that my progress level was a 3 on a 1-10 scale, I smiled and said "oh good, I'm almost at 1!" He graciously smiled back and informed me that 10 was our goal and we had some work to do. But I told him that I'm doing everything he recommended and getting plenty of rest. The only thing I'm unable to do is eat well or get rid of this 2 week long headache that lingers no matter what I take. He ordered a CT scan just to be safe and everything looks great! As I waited three longs hours to get the CT scan today, they require that you drink two huge bottles of this liquid something in order to do the scan. I'm already having issues with eating or drinking anything so being forced to drink the fake banana something drink was pretty much torture and I think I'm scarred for life. They give you two 450ml bottles and one small cup. You're instructed to drink a cup every 15 minutes and that you'll be done in an hour if you follow the directions. Again, pure torture and I have no idea how I finished those two bottles. Maybe I let it sit so long that it consumed into the air? So after that torture, they need to put an IV before you go do the CT scan.

You can't tell form the pictures, but my body was black and blue from all the needles and poking that was done after the surgery. My skin color was no longer tan, I described my color as an array of purples, greens and blues. The colors were quite lovely, but they are finally fading and I see my normal color again! The main problem is that nurses have a hard time finding my veins so they often poke in one and blood doesn't come out so they poke again and agin. I have a huge tolerance for needles and giving blood, but today was different and painful. They brought in two different nurses and the more painful it got. As they tried putting this IV in my arm, it reminded me of what my dad said earlier this week as we waited to be called so that they could draw his blood. He said "I don't want it to hurt anymore." not only did I silently cry after he said this to me, I silently cried again today as they grabbed and pierced like every wrong vein and knew actually what dad meant. But my four weeks doesn't even compare to the years that he's suffered so I'm totally ok with taking the pain now and knowing that this will hopefully give him a chance to start new and minimize any moment of pain going forward.

But I'll need to start eating and he scheduled a few appointments for next week to help with getting me closer to a 10 and ensure he gives me the green light to leave New York. As of today, he said I wouldn't be able to go just yet. I'll work on it :)

On a happier note, I really do have the most amazing family & friends and found that all my strength comes from your constant calls, packages, mail, texts, visits, get-to-gethers and Love!! I wanted to make sure you all knew that I'm so grateful for the connections I have with every one of you and how much I appreciate everything you've all done for me!!

And on a random note, looks like the Texas Rangers pulled off a victory for my pre-birthday and all the Texas music in the background makes me want to move back to Texas!!! Since David won't move to New York, maybe he'll consider Texas?!

Am I turning 30 or 60?

It's week three and my dad's first week out of the hospital has been going really well! He's walking around, eating well, and has much more energy than ever before. He's had a few appointments this week and his levels were a bit higher than normal, but he had an MRI and the doctors are making adjustments to his medication almost everyday. I'm his official pill counter and responsible for making sure that I'm removing/replenishing the correct pills into his pill box as changes are made. Talk about responsibility!! So far I'm doing a good job and I've only accidentally dropped all the pills once (and this happened on Tuesday) and dad is good so I must have put everything back in place correctly??! But really, one of my strengths is paying attention to detail so I really did put everything back in place :) He has to take over 20 pills three times a day and the doctors say that timing is crucial!! So grandma and I are super attentive to 9am, 2pm and 9pm. We have timers, bells, and everything going off to make sure we are precise and that those meds are administered right on time. Man, I'm really becoming a very versatile person so I might be in high demand after all this. I've gone from writer to a scientist to professional pill counter/notifier. Who knew that I would take on so many new roles in just a few weeks and before my 30th birthday!!

I'm embracing and accepted that I'm turning 30. Two reasons I'm at peace with this idea now. One is because I promised in my previous post that I would and I like to keep my promises especially since both dad and I are doing well after the surgery. Secondly, I'm now more concerned that my body thinks we are turning 60 instead of 30. So I've had a huge decrease in appetite this week and like I've told many of you, grandma gets concerned and I have forced feedings. I never thought it possible that I wouldn't have an appetite!!! I simply love food and I don't discriminate. And I mean I LOVE food!!! Since I'm not eating and getting enough nutrients that I need, my grandma is forcing me to share her Ensure shakes with her!!! I mean, they taste ok but I don't want my body thinking that I'm taking organs away and that we're down to Ensure strawberry shakes for life. I see Dr. Samstein on Friday so I'll let you know how that goes. My visiting nurse said she was
going to inform the doctor that I'm not eating (but she disappeared for the second time and then blames me for not being home but we all know I don't leave the house so not sure what's going on with the disappearing act).

Fingers crossed that I want food by Saturday so that we can retire the Ensure drinks and get back on track with living life in my 30s :)

Comings and Goings

Great news! Not only was I allowed to go outside today (first time to leave the house in a whole week!) but Dad will be released from the hospital tomorrow! And by home, I refer to our temporary home with Gloria near the hospital. He will be my roomie for the next couple of weeks and everyone in the house is doing a great job about keeping our "bubbles (aka our rooms)" squeaky clean. I saw him for the first time today since last Friday and what a miracle!! He's truly a new man from head to toe. We are truly amazed at his recovery and for the first time, I think it's finally starting to sink in that I gave part of my liver to my dad. I doubted my purpose and this process when I saw him in ICU last week and fear kicked in. But today was truly a reflection on why we sacrificed so much and knowing he is going home tomorrow affirms why I did this in the first place. I even got to reunite with two of my favorite nurses today. I was so blessed to have Agnes and Sylvia as two of my nurses and they were my angels in disguise. I know nurses are suppose to take care of you, but our relationship was different. They went above and beyond both times I was admitted to the hospital to check on me even when they weren't assigned as my nurse. They embraced me and my family with hugs and kisses and Agnes would never leave my side without saying I love you. She told all the staff on the 7th floor that I was her adopted daughter and since David was part of me, that she would take him too! They kept me emotionally strong and faithful through all the ups and downs. They saw all my tears (whether they were tears of joy, fear, or pain) and nurtured me as if I was their own daughter. It's no coincidence that God hand picked two of the most loving nurses for me and Agnes was assigned to take care of Dad on a few occasions before and after he was admitted to ICU. It brought me peace knowing he was in great hands. David took these pictures today as I reunited with Dad and my guardian angels!

On a sad note, David and Aunt Lorena left today to go back home. I miss them terribly and it's only been a few hours! They've both been in New York since September 22 so it was a true act of love and kindness for them to stay and devote all this time to be here and helping us with everything. Being around so much family makes me wish we were all closer. My family is huge and I'm sure we could build our own colony with houses next to each other. Or would that drive us crazy? Either way, I've enjoyed all this time with everyone and another blessing I should be grateful for in my life.

Happy Two Week Anniversary!!

It feels more like 2 months since we did the surgery and just thankful that I'm healing like a champ and that dad is fighting harder than ever to get well. Our prayers are being answered and some of dad's tubes were removed and he is able to communicate with us and is once again alert since being admitted to ICU.

I had my check up today with Dr. Samstein and he revealed the masterpiece scar that was created on my stomach. I'm in complete amazement that the scar is so much smaller than what I was expecting and I think it won't be as visible as I imagined once it's healed. As many of you know, I expressed concerned about having a huge scar running down my stomach including the 4 additional incisions that were necessary for the surgery. Because I have such a small mid section, the incision goes from below the breast bone all the way down to my belly button. I know it's lame to worry about scarring, but I saw so many pictures of post surgery scars and could only imagine how my scars would look and how I finally had an excuse not to ever wear a bikini again in my life (I already hate bathing suits so the perfect excuse to never wear one again?!). The doctors said that the incision I got has only been done less than a year and relatively a new method for living donors. My dad's incision is slightly bigger and he got the infamous Mercedes incision that most donors and recipients have.

We continue to pray and patiently wait for updates and more good news from the doctors on Dad's progress.

Favorite Memories Captured So Far

My mom. Out of everyone, I think she deserves the most admiration for everything she has gone through. She's so incredibly strong and has had to deal with so much. She continues to smile and I hope to be such a wonderful, loving, and caring mother and wife as she is.

So fortunate to have incredible in-laws and me sharing in a tender moment with David.

Dad right after the surgery feeling great and me with my new bear. The Liver team gives all donors a teddy bear made specially in Vermont and say's "You're a lifesaver" along with a medal of honor from the state of NY. So nice!

Getting ready for my first steps after the surgery and the second picture is me and David saying goodbye before the surgery.

Dad with grandma and sister before he was taken back for the transplant. The second picture is me and my new friend Buddy given to me by Dayle and Sheila. Buddy is pretty much as tall as me and kept me company throughout my hospital stay. He was a huge hit with every visitor, nurse, and doctor that came by my room and he's already being shipped back to San Jose to greet me when I get home.

Tia Gloria and Tio Chico were here all week with us and left back to California on Saturday. We had so much fun with all the crazy and funny stories and couldn't have made it through the week without all their help. My aunt was my guardian angel and stayed by my side every minute of the day. I miss you guys!!

We celebrated David's birthday a day late, but at least I was out of the hospital!!

Me getting my early birthday present, Buddy the Giraffe. The second picture is the sunset my sister captured one night from the view in my room. I got extremely lucky with all my rooms and the beautiful views of the Hudson River and the Empire State building.

Dayle and Sheila gave us all personalized gifts and made the pre-surgery days so special for us all.

My first shower-free, dry shampoo hair cleaning compliments of Tia Gloria. It felt amazing to have a fake shower! She made sure that me and Dad always had clean hair :)

Dad taking his first steps after the surgery and I just happened to be making my laps to his room. We got our first walk together on video and all the nurses were so excited to see us walking together!

Funny Fighting Liver

We remain strong and extremely confident that dad will be well and out of ICU soon. It appears that his condition is slightly better each day and he tries to communicate with us whenever we speak to him. He can't verbally speak since he has many tubes going in and out of his mouth, but we know he can hear us and that he is fighting to get better.  I last saw him on Friday and the first day that they put him on the breathing machine and feeding tubes. It broke my heart to see him unresponsive and his body was still extremely active and jumpy. The doctors tested to make sure he wasn't having seizures and thank God that the twitching he developed has settled some too.  I stood in the ICU room just starring at him and was actually scared to get near and make any contact with him. The doctor came by shortly after I entered his room and encouraged me to talk to him and engage with him. He said that dad could hear me and talking to him is the best thing we can do right now.

I finally walked up closer to dad and held his hand. He immediately gripped my fingers back and I knew he felt that I was there. I spoke to him softly and he told him that he was doing great and that we were all praying and thinking of him. I also told him that the right side of my liver (the piece that was transplanted to him) not only contained all the funny blood cells that was bringing out his new humor, but that it was the strongest organ that I had taken out of me just to help him fight and get through this. Again, I'm probably not scientifically correct, but it sounds good to me :)

Today, he remains stable and is becoming more alert. Like I told my dad, we will get through this together and you have mini me fighting with you so giving up is not an option.

You mean there's no scientific data associated with my new discovery?

There is a good chance that I will be released from the hospital today. Dr. Samstein came in this morning and said that all my tests came back normal and yesterday's action plan is putting me back on track to recovering well and healthy. They found that the tube that was suppose to be draining the bile from my stomach out somehow got clogged inside and the reason for liquid build-up piles near the liver and lungs. They removed the tube yesterday morning (the oddest feeling in the whole world as I felt this plastic tube slither through inside of my body. Talk about uncomfortable and strange!!!) and now I just have a bag attached to drain out the fluid. They also pulled out magical pills and drinks to give me all day long to clean out my system and I feel renewed! I told poor David that my two birthday gifts for him yesterday was the removal of my tube and the cleansing of my colon! He's such trooper and said that these were the best presents ever :) I promised to make it up to him and I told him to choose another day this month to celebrate his birthday...he said he chose the 23rd and he smiled really big. PROBLEM. The 23rd is my birthday this month and after two seconds of thinking about it, I said absolutely not. I think I've earned my sharing girl scout badge for this month so he's going to have to choose another day :) the doctors are meeting againto see if they are going to drain the fluid today or let me go home to recover.

David wanted me to also send a huge thanks on his behalf for all the birthday wishes texts, calls, messages he received from everyone yesterday.

Dad is still hanging in there. He had a CT scan last night and we are waiting to hear from the doctors about those results. They did tell us that his body appears to be accepting my liver well so far. He's taking many new meds and the side effects and interactions are having a pretty strong effect on his actions and being. He's definitely developed a vivid imagination and has been quite the entertainer with funny stories and comments. My aunts are compiling a list of funny sayings and stories. I like to say that my liver is making him a funnier person. Science doesn't link the liver to your sense of humor, but I'm still going to take credit for any new positive changes in my dad :) Still no estimated date of departure from the hospital, but we will keep you all posted with every test result the next couple of days.

I have so many pictures and stories to share so I'll be updating those this week!

In-N-Out

I wish I were referring to the restaurant because a double double cheeseburger sure does sound good. I usually get the cheeseburger protein style and splurge on the fries, oh my!

Hello again to you all and wanted to post a quick note since it's been a whole week since the surgery and David has done a fabulous job as co-editor. I will keep this brief and catch you all up on the many stories I want to share but wanted to say thank you for the tremendous love and kindness we have received from each in everyone of you. Our family is truly blessed and couldn't have gotten through any of this without all of you.

Since my title doesn't refer to the restaurant, I wanted to let you know that I was released from the hospital Sunday evening but after two days of being home and experiencing bursts of pain, I was instructed to go into the ER and be admitted back to the hospital this evening. Nothing major though and we will have more information tomorrow about how long I will stay this time and what the action plan is for fixing some of the pain I currently have. After 8 hours in the ER (being in the NY ER is a whole wacky world of it's own) and after reviewing preliminary CT scans they found that there is some additional leakage in my liver and some fluid build up in my lungs. No worries though, the doctors are meeting first thing in the morning and God told me that he will be leading the meeting on the best action plan to fix the leakage :) I'll post more tomorrow and please keep those prayers coming our way. Dad is also doing well and we've had a few bumps in the road but those are also being handled by God.

We are so lucky to have had Sheila and Dayle and Tio Alex out here last week and our family dream team continues to be here with us this week ( Tia Gloria, Tio Chico, Tia Lorena, both Grandma's) and just love them to pieces!!!!! It's been amazing having them here and we will celebrate David's 29th birthday tomorrow ( I love you my precious husband)!!!!

from David...

Tati has been experiencing some additional pain because of a bile leak due to a small internal incision that was found using ultrasound on day 2 after the surgery. The incision was small enough that the doctors believe it would heal on its own. She is looking and feeling much better now on the 3rd day after surgery. Both Tati and her father are still in quite a bit of pain and the strong pain medication they are provided does tend to make them both nauseous, however they seem to be recovering at a normal rate. I am told the average time in the hospital after this particular surgery is 4-8 days. Since we are only on the 3rd day I believe we are doing good at this point. They are both looking and seem to be feeling better with each day.

Day after surgery

from David ...

The day after surgery is coming to an end and things are looking great. Both Tati and her father have been up smiling and talking for the majority of the day. Tati's father remains in ICU and Tati has been moved to a post-op recovery room and expected to be moved to a normal room tomorrow or the next day as she gets better. Her father will follow the same process of moving rooms as he slowly recovers as well. Although both are still experiencing some pain there has been nothing unexpected up to this point in time and both are recovering at a rate well above average, so we are told. The doctors will be keeping both in the hospital for the next week or so as they continue to monitor their progress.

Things are definitely looking up!

Surgery Day is Over

from David ...

So it has been a very long and nail biting day for us out here in the waiting room but the day has finally come to an end. Currently I sit in the hospital waiting room as it is nearing midnight but our day started long ago...

Our day began at 4:30 am, we arrived at the hospital around 5:30 am where we meet the surgeons and their staff who reviewed our upcoming day in detail. Around 7:30 am Tati was taken into surgery, and her father followed shortly after. At this point we began the long foreseeable wait and everyone in attendance remained in good spirit throughout the day. The doctors emerged from their hiding place around 1pm to let us know Tati's surgery went extremely well - there was almost no bleeding, no blood transfusion was required, and they reported that they would be done buttoning her up within the next two hours. A few hours later the doctors again emerged from their cocoon to let us know her father, Jose, would be done shortly and that they encountered no major problems. This was excellent news and an enormous weight was lifted off all of our shoulders, we could breathe again! The next few hours consisted of moving Tati and her father into ICU and into the recovery stage.

When I first came upon Tati in the ICU her eyes were barely open and she was lying coldly still. All my fears and doubts had suddenly presented themselves to me when I laid eyes upon my fragile wife lying in that hospital bed. But Tati, being the lively strong loving character that she is, suddenly sprung to life and that smile that we all know and love was suddenly back in full force! I whispered to her not to talk, just rest, when all of a sudden, and with every ounce of energy she managed to find, she spurted out "but I want to talk!" and began gently laughing. This was one of the happiest and most comforting moments of my entire life. To know that my loving wife had conquered such a great feat and came out on top just can not be described with words. I can not tell you how much it means to us to know that we have had such loving, caring, family and friends supporting us this entire time. We could not have come this far without you and it really does mean the world to us.

Although our journey is not yet over we feel the hardest part is done and I hope you will keep us in your prayers as we enter the long slow recovery stages of our journey.

More Photos

Here are some more photos we took before surgery this morning and one photo of Tati's doctor. We have a lot more photos that we will post in good time.

Jose update

from David's iPhone...

We just got word that Tatis father, Jose, is doing okay. They finished up a few minutes ago and we expect to see him within the next hour. They both made it through okay, they must now just recover. Photos and more details to come late tonight.
from David's iPhone ...

I just went down and saw Tati in the ICU, she is in some pain as expected but otherwise looking great. I've never seen anybody try and talk so much immediately after surgery, I believe that is a very good sign, now she just has to sleep and recover. She will remain in ICU throughout the night and moved to a normal room tomorrow, depending on her recovery condition.

We are still awaiting word of her fathers progress at this time.

Almost over!

We just spoke with the Doctors who informed us they encountered no problems with Tati's surgery, they expect her to be out of surgery and in the ICU/recovery room in about 1 hour's time. Her father's surgery is still in progress but they advised everything looks very good at this point and that her father should be done in 2-3 hours time. We are almost there!

Update

from David...

Tati and her father are still in surgery at this time. We haven't heard from the doctors yet, I assume that is a good thing. We are so grateful to have such loving family and friends, keep praying for us!

I will post more shortly and let everyone know just as soon as we hear something.

For those looking for Gloria's apartment address it is below. Tati and her father will be staying here during their post-hospital recovery time.

Off to Surgery

from David ...

Well Tati is off to surgery, as of 5:30am ET this morning. If everything goes well she should be done around 3pm ET this afternoon and her father should be done a few hours after. Make sure to keep them both in your prayers.

Let the families arrive!!

It's our last weekend together before the surgery and we already have a full house of family who have arrived. Abuelita Vilma arrived last week, Toti, Tia Lorena, Tio Alex and David arrived a few days ago and we are picking up Dayle and Sheila from the airport today. It's going to be a full fun house for the next couple of days that will keep our minds busy before Tuesday. We're having theme nights and everyone is assigned a theme for cooking so today is Italian night and Tia Lorena is preparing a huge feast!!

Tia Ana was so gracious to put all the schedules and themes together and sad she won't be here this week, but if I get to go back to California shortly after the surgery then She will come help me out once I'm back in San Jose!!

We also settled in to Gloria's new apartment and the location is literally steps to the hospital. She found a three bedroom place where my dad and I will go once we're released and stay there until necessary. We've been slowly filling up this 3 bedroom place with beds and little stuff. I even found myself "shopping" in all the closets at my parents house to see what I wanted to take. I don't have a Costco card but I'm pretty sure shopping and picking out stuff that I wanted to take (for FREE!) beats any Costco. But don't worry, I ended up only taking the essentials like the bottle waters, soap, toilet paper. I was practical and would like to prove to all of you that would survive in simple settings like the woods or camping situations. The 5 star hotel is always desirable and necessary, but I'm a simple girl too :)

Many of you have requested the hospital address and my parent's address in Long Island so here is the information!

After the surgery, my dad and I will be recovering at the Milstein Hospital Building for 4-7 days, depending on how everything goes:

177 Ft. Washington Avenue

New York, NY 10032

7 Hudson South, 7th Floor

My parents address in Long Island:

96 Southaven Avenue

Medford, NY 11763

You can call David at 512-913-9678 or Gloria

A Prayer for Healing and Hope

We have been absolutely blessed with so much support, prayers, and all your unconditional love. I know this blog is meant to express and share, but there aren't enough words that will ever express our eternal gratidue and appreciation for everything that you've all done for us.

We've gotten so many prayers from you all and my dad wanted wanted to especially share this prayer that was sent to him from his Godmother Betty Quan. She has been such a great and powerful influence in his life and like many of you, she has sent a request for prayer in our names. Our Lady of Lourdes will share in Masses for Healing at the Sacred Grotto in Lourdes, France and at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois.

Prayer to the Guardian Angel

Spirit Protector, who gives constant protection to me, my loved ones, and my friends
who help me. Give guidance to those who assist me with answers to my problems and give comfort to my soul.

Reveal to me what I must do tomorrow. And give strength and courage to my afflicted spirit, Make my problems disappear and restore my faith.

-Amen

Prayer of a Grateful Heart

I praise and thank you. Oh God, for the countless blessings You sent into my life.
You are with me in times of joy, and peace, as well as days of pain, sickness, and sorrow.

Through Your goodness, I can delight in good health, find happiness in family,
friendships, work and play, go trough experiences that challenge me, and learn
wisdom through people and events that lead me yo walk in Your ways.

I thank You, loving God,
for the beauty that inspires,
for the laughter that enlivens, for the kindness that encourages,
for the love that affirms and sanctifies.

Grant me share in Your grace each day, that I may so live as to be cause of
gratitude for others, serving, You without need for reward, and with a heart
grateful, faithful, and free.

-Amen

New York, New York

So one of my favorite songs just happens to be this song by Alicia Keys, New York. The version that most people recognize is her with and Jay-Z singing and the version I Love is slower and she performed this once on Saturday Night Live. For the longest time I couldn’t find this version and just last week one of my friends at work (special shout out to Jess Byers) was telling me that she had been listening to this song. I listen to this song over and over and just get caught up in the emotion no matter how many times I hear it!

This is the perfect song especially today because I fly out to New York tonight. I leave at 10:25pm and wake up in New York at 6:44am. The hard part was trying to pack as much as I could in one bag and not knowing when I’ll be back in California. But David arrives next Thursday so as long as he’s there with me and as much as I love being in New York, I’m pretty sure I won’t be homesick for awhile!! So as sad as it is to say goodbye to everyone and everything here, I quickly turn this song on and sing my heart out to the chours :

“New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do, Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Let's hear it for New York, New York,
New York.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PHOeXIPNZE

So I’m making this my theme song for the next few months and isn’t the chorus so fitting for this journey?! There’s nothing I can’t do, the NY streets will make me and my dad both feel brand new (especially him with his new liver) and we will be inspired with the coming months. Good thing we’re in New York!

Farewell sunshine state, I’ll be waking up in New York, New York (in my Alicia Keys-esque voice)!

"It's Time" = Auto Cue for Tati to Cry

David and I participated in the annual Liver walk this weekend here in San Jose. We joined the LeClaire team, whose story I’ve mention in my previous post. They were celebrating their 5 year anniversary of sharing a liver and both Jay and Randy are completely healthy and radiated with love for life. It was so inspiring and comforting to hear so many stories, meet so many courageous people that have gone through all walks of life and yet we had all gathered for one common cause. During the 3 mile walk, there were facts posted along the trail that gave statistics and information about Liver disease. I think it was the perfect cram session for me to learn and gain awareness of things that I never knew about. Since my reading choices typically include People or gossip magazines, I rarely take the time to read up on the stats of liver disease, so this was the perfect morning as I get ready to leave California this week.

Not only did this walk help me learn some new things, it also gave me my first interaction with another living liver donor. Jay was so gracious to talk and just answer all the questions I had about his experience. His wife and son also shared their side of the story and filled in the gaps that Jay didn’t really remember about his first few days after the surgery. I just wanted to listen and absorb everything they were telling me and all the tips they were sharing with us. There was one moment where I finally felt my stomach drop and felt like everything became real. Jay mentioned that the hardest thing for him was having to say goodbye to his family before they took him to the surgery room. Since there are so many unknowns on what can happen, they prepared for the worst case scenario and all these preparations were hard on him and his kids. As soon as he told me this, I fast forwarded two weeks and thought how I was going to be strong when it came my time to go into that operating room. I can only keep praying that I will continue to carry this peacefulness in my heart and know that everything will be ok.

So here is my disclaimer/warning for all of those that will be at the hospital with us in a few weeks: It is quite likely that I will cry and maybe lose it just a tiny bit as the doctors and anesthesiologist approach and tell me “It’s time.” BUT have no fear and just know that I have a tendency to cry and get emotional when such announcements are made. All my bridesmaids can attest to this as I cried on my wedding day when the wedding planner came to announce that “It was time” to go upstairs and start the ceremony! My photographer even captured this emotional moment as my bridesmaids told me to stop crying to avoid ruining my make up before the wedding even started. Awww, that was a great day!!
